Lack of sufficient data collection, reporting and monitoring, fails young people as a development constituency in two different ways. On the one hand, when international and national strategies aimed at empowering and involving youth don’t rely on sound analytical skills and proper tools, they are bound to paint only an incomplete picture of the needs and strengths of young people. On the other, youth organizations and young leaders are often found to have a very positive impact on the ground through their projects and initiatives, yet they are unable to adequately monitor this impact and consequently adapt and/or scale their efforts to increase efficiency, effectively communicate their contribution to sustainable development, and ultimately achieve their goals.
Accordingly, the objective of this module is to improve the foundations of young people and youth organizations in using, understanding and gathering data in order for them to become key actors in the SDGs Data Revolution. More specifically, the module would address:
- The need for linking data roadmaps and ecosystems with the needs of young people and youth organizations.
- The untapped resource of youth organizations worldwide: teaching how data can be collected and used for impact measurement, collaboration, and resource mobilization.
THE MODULE IS SPLIT IN TWO PARTS:
PART I addresses gaps in the SDG indicator framework and recommends areas for improvement, including in terms of leveraging youth to provide citizen generated data which is aligned with the framework. The analysis ends with a set of data principles for adequately considering youth needs in collecting, using, and developing data.
PART II has 5 objectives:
- Introduce why monitoring is important, not just for the SDGs, but also the empowerment of young people;
- Use infographics and visualizations to explain the SDG indicator framework;
- Describe the essential ideas of statistics and impact measurement, and how they should relate to the daily operations of an organization;
- List the possibilities for being involved in national data roadmaps and pathways.
- Identify opportunities for multi-stakeholder approaches through which the enhanced capacity of youth on data can lead to action, better decision making, and further empowerment of young people themselves around the SDGs
An expert group is being assembled to support the development of this module. Stay tuned for updates.
